Keeper's Room
On the ground floor off the cobbled yard, with a deep window seat and a door you can leave open on the two warm weeks of the year.
Northmoor began as a shooting lodge at the head of a long glen. It is now a casino resort with twenty-four rooms, a smokehouse kitchen, a whisky bar that keeps the fire lit from October, and the Stagroom casino floor in the old gun hall.
18+The casino floor is for adults aged 18 and over · photo ID checked on every visit
Three feet of granite, small windows on the north face, and a hall wide enough to dry four sets of boots at once.
The original lodge went up in 1871 for a family who came north twice a year and left the house shuttered the rest of the time. It changed hands often, lost its roof in a storm, and sat empty for most of a decade before the current owners took it on and spent four winters putting it right.
What they kept: the granite, the stag-horn chandelier in the hall, the flagstone floors and the smell of peat that gets into everything. What they added: proper insulation, twenty-four rooms with working radiators, a kitchen that smokes its own fish, and a casino floor where the gun hall used to be.
The pace here is set by the weather and by dinner. People walk, read, sit in the sauna house, and come down at seven when the bar lights up. The Stagroom opens at the same hour, and some nights it is the busiest room in the building.
Everything happens here, in the lodge, in person. There is nothing to play on this website and nothing to pay for on it.
Wool blankets, a kettle with proper tea, a torch by the door for walking back from the sauna. Sizes are approximate.
On the ground floor off the cobbled yard, with a deep window seat and a door you can leave open on the two warm weeks of the year.
First floor, facing straight down the glen. On a clear night you can see the lights of nothing at all, which is the point.
Two rooms in the south-west corner, a working fireplace that the staff lay each afternoon, and a bath under the window.
A stone cottage sixty paces behind the lodge: two bedrooms, a wood stove, a kitchen table and a drying room for everything you wore outside.
Five tables, a card room behind the panelling and a casino bar that pours the same whisky as everywhere else in the building.
The Stagroom is a land-based casino room inside the lodge. It seats fewer than sixty people on a full night, which means the dealers have time to explain a game properly instead of waving you to a seat.
Most guests who have never played start on a Wednesday, when a host runs a slow table for beginners and nobody is expected to stake anything at all. The rest of the week it runs on its own rhythm, quiet early and busy after ten.
To be clear about what this website is: it describes a casino room inside a hotel. It carries no online casino games, takes no bets and processes no payments.
Open every evening, 19:00 until 02:00
The smokehouse runs most mornings. What comes out of it decides half the menu.
Hot-smoked trout, mutton cooked for nine hours, root vegetables from the walled garden and bread baked at four in the afternoon.
Porridge, eggs and black pudding until ten, then soup, sandwiches and whatever the kitchen has left over from the night before.
Ninety-odd bottles, a fire from October to April, and a bartender who will talk you out of the expensive one if a cheaper one suits you better. A full list of drinks without alcohol too.
A counter in the old dairy for oatcakes, shortbread and flasks of coffee to take up the hill. Opens before anything else does.
Open to guests and to visitors. Two of them fill up, so ask at the desk if you want a seat.
Someone from the estate spreads out the walking maps and marks the routes that are passable this week.
Two or three players in the corner of the Peat Room, no amplification, no set list.
A casino host runs a slow table and teaches roulette and blackjack from scratch. No stake expected. Adults 18+ only.
Five drams poured blind, with the bartender explaining each one once everyone has guessed badly.
One long table, one menu, whatever came out of the smokehouse that morning.
A caller, a band and no requirement whatsoever to know the steps.
A writer or a local historian talks for forty minutes, then the bar stays quiet for anyone who wants to keep reading.
In deep winter the programme thins out and the fire gets more use. Reception always has the current week.
The sauna house is a timber building beside the burn, built by a joiner from the next glen. Inside there is a cedar room hot enough to be taken seriously, a cold plunge fed straight from the water, and a bench outside for the part where you sit and steam and say nothing for ten minutes.
Rooms are ready from 15:00 and we ask for them back by 11:00. The last stretch of road is single-track with passing places; take it slowly in the dark. Bags can be left at reception either side of a stay.
Children are welcome in the rooms, the Long Hall, the Smokehouse and the sauna house during family hours. The Stagroom casino floor is closed to under-18s at all times, with or without a parent.
The ground floor, the Long Hall, the Peat Room and the Stagroom are all step-free from the courtyard entrance. Two rooms are adapted and there is a lift to the first floor. Tell us what you need before you arrive.
The Stagroom is an adults-only room and an evening there should be an evening out, nothing more. Our hosts will agree a limit with you before you play, remind you when your time is up, hold a break for you, or arrange a confidential self-exclusion. They can also hand you the number of an independent helpline, at any hour and with no questions asked.

Yes, and they would rather you asked. Tell any host your limit of time or money before you start. They will keep track, come and tell you when you have reached it, and arrange a break or an exclusion if you want one.
The Smokehouse and the Long Hall both take outside bookings. The Friday smokehouse table and the Saturday ceilidh are the two that fill up first.
The Long Hall seats forty-eight for a private dinner and the cottage can be let alongside it. Write to us with the dates and the numbers and we will tell you honestly whether it works.
Send the nights you have in mind, the room you fancy and anything that would make the stay work better — a cot, a ground-floor room, a late arrival after the kitchen closes. Reception answers by email, usually within a working day.
